The Studio  Portrait – Portobello Photography School Workshop Amazing Christmas present and experience for the photography lover in your life or as a well-deserved gift to yourself. An opportunity to make photographs in a photographic studio on this one-day workshop with the support of photographer and experienced educator Alicia Bruce. Teas coffees and tasty treats will be provided during the day. This is a special collaboration with the wonderful Meow Photography Studios in Causwayside. The venue was a loft built and designed by Sir Basil Urwin Spence in c.1933 and used to be a petrol filling station and garage.  It’s stunning. Over the course of the day you will learn how to work two to three studio set ups to make photographic portraits as well as looking at and discussing iconic portraits made by established photographers. We will cover: Lighting Camera settings Studio set up Composition Engagement Context and much more. Our base for the day with stunning and unique Meow Photography Studios, a fully equipt photographic studio used by professionals.   About the tutor Alicia Bruce has 20 years of photographic experience and 10 years teaching experience and a teaching qualification. She is currently Teaching Fellow in Photography at the University of Edinburgh and Photography Tutor at Edinburgh College of Art. She also teaches popular photography weekends at Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow. Alicia has exhibited and published her photography internationally winning several awards, including the Royal Scottish Academy Morton Award. Her work is held in several public and private collections, including National Galleries of Scotland. Recent commissions include Zero Tolerance’s ‘Violence Unseen’, ‘209 Women’ at the UK Parliament, ‘Our World Heritage’ for Edinburgh World Heritage. Her teaching page is:   Who is the course suitable for? This course is suitable for enthusiasts and experienced practitioners moving from analogue to digital. There will be a basic camera refresher but the focus of the day is studio lighting. If you have little to no experience using your DSLR or mirrorless camera I recommend attending The Camera workshop in advance of the course. What to bring? Essential: Participants should bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera with batteries charged and a cleared memory card, a notebook and pen.  Desirable: A tripod. All students will be provided with a workshop schedule and a learning pack. Meow provide wireless triggers to borrow for Canon, Nikon and Sony systems so please let us know what camera you intend to bring. There will be photography books and magazines from Alicia Bruce's collection to browse for inspiration.
