The People's Flag and the Union Jack with Gerry Hassan and Eric Shaw

Blackwell's are pleased to welcome Gerry Hassan and Eric Shaw to the bookshop, where they will be discussing their latest collaboration 'The People's Flag and the Union Jack'. The British Labour Party has at times been a force for radical change in the UK, but one critical aspect of its makeup has been misunderstood and underplayed: its Britishness. Throughout the party’s history, its Britishness has been an integral part of how it has done politics, acted in government and opposition, and understood the UK and its nations and regions. The People’s Flag and the Union Jackis the first comprehensive account of how Labour has tried to understand Britishness and Britain, and compete in a political landscape defined by the imperial hangover and continuation of the Empire State, and conservative notions of nation, patriotism and tradition. Such dilemmas have increasingly come to the centre of political debate – in the Scottish independence debate, Brexit, and the re-emergence of the English dimension. The People’s Flag and the Union Jack assesses this historic backdrop to these concerns coming up to date with the Corbyn leadership and the emergence of a new radical politics. Dr. Gerry Hassan is a writer and academic at Dundee University and the author and editor of numerous books on Scottish politics including Caledonian Dreaming, Independence of the Scottish Mindand SNP Leaders. Dr. Eric Shaw is an academic at Stirling University and author of several acclaimed studies of the Labour Party including Losing Labour’s Soul?: New Labour and the Blair Government 1997-2007. Hassan and Shaw have previously written the definitive account of Scottish Labour’s rise and fall: The Strange Death of Labour Scotland.  For more information, or if you would like a signed copy because you can't make it to the event, please contact the Blackwell's Edinburgh events team on 0131 622 8237 or
