Cut and Paste: Rethinking Collage's Histories

In this talk, Dr Freya Gowrley (University of Derby) will look at how and why previous histories of collage have discounted examples of the genre produced before 1900. Examining various types of collage made between the Renaissance and the end of the Victorian period, the talk will consider both how and why collage was made during this time frame, as well as the motivations of its makers, owners, and viewers. In so doing, the talk will reveal a story of knowledge gathering and exploration, of emotional expression, and of gendered creative production.
