      Arniston House

The family seat of the Dundas family, Arniston House is an elegant Palladian mansion built in 1726 by architect William Adam and continued by his son John. It replaces the Tower House which had stood on the site since the 1500s. William Adam designed formal gardens, but in the 1750s these were swept away in favour of the fashionable landscape gardens laid out in the style of Capability Brown.

The tour of the house will place the history of the Dundas family and Arniston in the context of Scottish and World events. It will include the restored Dining Room and Drawing Room, featuring John Adam's original decoration and the much older Oak Room, which was part of the medieval fortified tower house. There are a pair of libraries; one designed by William Adam hosts a collection of fine ceramics. The Arniston Collection contains generations of family portraits and exquisite artwork by artists such as Ramsay, Raeburn and Nasmyth; as well as beautiful period furniture, stunning architectural and stucco work.

Please note that the tour involves stairs and there is no lift.

      Cost: 20.00
